24.04.2009 Decoration The ceremony took place at the Austrian Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro. The Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science and Art is the highest award of merit in this sector. It is granted by the president of Austria himself. It was created by law in 1955 based on a distinction created during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and carries a cabalistic particularity: the number of (living) holders of the merit is limited to 36 Austrian citizens and 36 foreigners, of which 18 in the field of sciences and 18 in the arts, respectively. The award has been granted, among others, to the American singer Jessye Norman (2008), the Japanese conductor Seiji Ozawa (2002), the physicist Hannspeter Winter and Frank Sinatra. |
